the other day i came across an old woman begging for help on the road, her son had abandoned her in the city which she was not familiar with.she was from far suburb town, she did not know where to go and how to reach her home with no money with her.she was taken to the police station...i hope she is back home by now.a lot of old women are suffering like this on the streets, abandoned by their family, leading a pathetic lonely life with no one to look after, begging to survive.young generation is becoming inhuman towards elderly people.they treat them like excess baggage forgetting the fact that they themselves will be at that stage one day, ignoring the effect they are making on their children by dumping their old parents either on streets or in old age home, making and ever lasting impression on their kids that this is how old people should be treated and when they grow up they will do the same with them.
Indian society is becoming more liberal(westernised) in thought process with globalisation, but still,Indian women are treated differently.in most households, birth of a girl is still not accepted whole heatedly by people in family.negligence still prevails towards her upbringing, her health, her education.she is still expected to give birth to a male child after marriage, her only hope of domestic support at old age.the concept of joint family is fading away with modern times for different reasons.the tolerance level among young people has gone down, they want to have their 'own space' where there is no place for elder people.homes have become pigeon holes hardly any room for more than 2-3 people, bigger homes are too expensive for a common man.even small cars are being designed for small families with 2-3 people.above all our hearts have become small,we have become self centred,no place for others in our hearts, just i,me,myself.
coming back to the plight of older women who are being ignored by society, their contribution is overlooked.innumerable women are working to support their jobless husbands and children beyond their physical limitations being old.they continue to be active in household chores, cooking, washing clothes, bringing up grandchildren.not only in households, they are making valuable contribution to the society by actively participating in taking care of the terminally ill, imparting their collected knowledge and wisdom to the next generation, maintaining the traditions and conventions of their culture which is fading away in the tsunami of western culture which the young ones are preferring over their own rich culture and becoming cheap copies of west, loosing their own identity to the world.these services go unrecognised as they cannot be measured in terms of money.
they deserve better treatment and the right to live their lives with respect and dignity.
